Ikon Gallery presents the first major UK exhibition by Swis artist Jean-Frederic Schnyder. His practice, which includes paintings, scultpure and embroidery, spans the last 3 decades and has recieved much international acclaim.
The exhibition consists of over 100 paintings, which survey the artist's electic style. Schnyder has developed a holistic approach inspired by naturalism, realism, kitsch, abstract, popular and outsider art.
Schnyder's work challenges the very essence of our understanding of art. As an artistic peoposition, it is informed as much by the 'anti-art' thinking of Duchamp as by cultural influences closer to home, through the paintings of Paul Klee and Ferdinand Hodler, his Calvanist background, and local wood carvings.
Exhibition supported by Pro Helvetia, Prescence Switzerland and The Embassy of Switzerland.
