PRESS RELEASE : 7 June 2002
KABALLES : Photographs by Noemi Otamendi
14 September - 10 November 2002
Public Space Galleries: mac, Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham, B12 9QH.
Open daily 9am - 11pm Admission Free
The subject matter of the Spanish artist Otamendi's stunning black and white photographs is both horses and the nature of fascination itself. She causes us to consider the strangeness of the animal and our relationship to it through focussing solely on such details as eyes or nostrils or horse body in extreme close-up, so that we become disorientated and unable to form the whole creature in our minds. The disturbing photographs are large, a metre square, and have the intensity of images in dreams. Since childhood she has had a compulsion to represent the horse through art and writes:
These beasts loom out of the shadows and into our light. Seductive and dreadful, fabulous and spectacular, they are unnervingly pleasurable.
Otamendi was born in 1975 in La Coruna and has exhibited widely. She lives and works in Spain but, on receipt of a scholarship, she completed an MA in Photographic studies at the University of Westminster.
