Statement
My sculptural
work mainly concerns growth and form repetition and environmental issues
especially man-versus nature and the nature of man. Often unconventional,
wherever possible, the use of recycled material is preferred. I am also
interested in natural patterns and the surety that all matter eventually returns
to the turning circle of nature.
I have always been a maker and it was once said of me that I
like to make a silk purse out of a sows ear. Therefore when a choice
presented itself as to whether I should major in painting, printing or
sculpture, I was drawn to the latter though sometimes the other disciplines
overlap.
Environmental issues are, in my opinion, more important than
any other problem as nature is more powerful than man. A balance has to be
maintained to support all life as we know it. Life depends on nature yet nature
is life, giving and also taking.
Artists I am interested in and have been influenced by are
Richard Deakin, Robert Morris. Mario Merz, Donald Judd, Richard Long, Tony Cragg,
to name but a very few.
I asked a tutor once what he did with most of his finished
work and he said most were in his garden rotting away. I like this idea as
everything that is never disappears but eventually returns to nature.
